How to Finance a Start-Up Company

OK. So you have a great idea for a company and you decide to start looking for a way to finance your start-up. What now? Well you have to begin by asking yourself some very crucial questions first.

1. What will the valuation of the company be once you start operating? It all depends on many things, but generally you divide your initial start-up and operating costs between all or some of your co-founders. Say you have a company that will have an initial valuation of $100,000 then you would divide that in 6 equal parts or any agreed combination of percentages which usually go for $1,000 per percent. If I would want a 10% stake in your company, I would need to dish out $10,000.

2. How much money do you need to start and continue operating for, at least, two years even if your not generating profit from your company? Normally, this is where you begin searching for a Bank that can give you a Small Business Loan. For this you will probably need financial statements from all your Co-Founders, so choose your partners wisely and make sure that you are effectively partnering and not just accepting partners because they have cash. In the wonderful, complex world of Marketing, the pinnacle of every small, medium or large business is to have their brand recognized by potential customers. It seems everywhere you set your eyes on these days, you're almost definitely going to see some sort of brand recognition ad. It almost seems like the whole world is branded. We will be exposed in one way or another to almost all the major brands by lunchtime. Let see how this works:

First you wake up to the Pioneer AM/FM stereo digital alarm clock on your night table; you look at the time... and there it is perfectly placed right next to the AM LED. Then you get up and take your morning shower, you pick up your Irish Spring soap bar (even though it's already half used, you can still see the letters) and you wash you hair with Head & Shoulders. Then you pick up your Oral B toothbrush and you brush your teeth with AquaFresh.

OK your dressed, so you head to the kitchen and your Mr. Coffee already has your Folger's ready. Can YOU Help Reinvent Network Marketing?

For the past few years, I've been involved with a few MLM companies and, for the most, it's been a positive experience. Nonetheless, the emotional instability of the business is always there, the coming-soon products that never arrived are always there, the over-hyped convention meetings... Well, you get the point. All MLM companies have more or less been behaving this way since the dawn of Amway.

For us Home-based Business Owners (MLM'rs or Network Marketers, if you prefer) that's just the way it is and we have learned to cope with it. Now ask yourself this: how many times have you heard your "Mentor" preach: "If you want to make it big in Network Marketing, you've GOT to sell the opportunity, not the product." And then when your potential customer runs away and never wants to hear from you again (even if they are family or friends) they say: "Oh well, you have to focus on the big picture" or worse yet: "You have to be willing to sacrifice..." No! I think it's time we really changed our approach with potential customers and even with people whom we believe would be excellent prospects for our business.

Here are a few pointers for you to start taking control of your business:

First of all, YOU have to realize that your business is exactly that: It is YOUR BUSINESS. You run the show. And as such YOU should take sole responsability for the highs and lows that may arise as a product of your own actions within it. You cannot pretend to buy into an MLM company, sell the opportunity to a couple of your friends and family and just wait for everything to fall in place magically and for the money to start raining down; nothing in life works that way! Why would you treat your home-based business different than any other business? Every business requires hard work (at least for a few years), and sacrifice (more hard work) if it's going to have any level of success.

Secondly, you have to believe that the product you are selling is, at least, good. I prefer to sell a product that I myself believe to be GREAT; but if we're going to be realistic about it, sometimes we have to sell less-than-great products and make them look like the best thing since toothpaste; and that's totally ok as long as we ourselves are willing to use them on a regular basis. Simply put: Why would you push a product that you wouldn't even consider buying for yourself?

And finally, if you have a good enough product in your hands, LEAD WITH IT! Yes, I said it! Don't lead with the opportunity if you want to have long-term success in network marketing, MLM or any other business for that matter. If you start pitching the opportunity to a potential customer who's just interested in your product, you will just scare him into thinking that you're marketing another get-rich-quick scheme with some bogus product. Believe me, he will run away! But, on the other hand, if you pitch your product and your product is good enough that you expose enough people to it AND they start to see you as an authority on what you're selling, people will believe you are a succesful entrepreneur who can probably help THEM do the same for themselves. Then they will ask you about the opportunity!

I know, I know. You're gonna say that this is not the right way and that the company has always done it a certain way and it has worked for them, etc, etc... But I'm talking to that 97% of network marketers who have never made any money and will probably not make it through their first year in the business before giving up. I'm just saying that there are other possible ways to make it happen for some of us. I'm saying that we should always be looking for ways to improve our approach and start seeing ourselves as Business Owners and not as MLMrs or Network Marketers.

I know I haven't posted for a while now, I've been really busy with my other websites and blogs. I'm very excited about one of the simplest ideas I bought to life, Goobony.com. Goobony is a simple search engine (powered by Google) with a black background. Why black? Well, I don't know if you've heard of this before, but there was actually a big debate some time ago about the possibility of background or scatter radiation being emitted from PC monitors in the form of VLF's or ELF's (very and extremely low frequencies)that could potentially be harmful to the PC user.

When I started my online ventures a few months ago, I was so excited about MLM's and afilliate marketing. I thought that I was going to be able to quit my day job in no time. Boy, was I wrong. Although it is true that you can make a living (and even a killing) off afilliate marketing, it is a much more tedious process than just setting up a website and placing other peoples codes on it.

It's all about traffic and quality content. You can't have one without the other. You cannot be succesful without both. It's as simple as that. Take my online store Sanzmart.com - I set this store up in June 2007 (I paid for the setup) and after a couple of months I had to put up some Google Adsense just to break even with my hosting costs.

My other store is an afilliate marketing website: ShopNow.ws - This one makes me more money than my own store Sanzmart! But even then, I just couldn't break even without having to resort to Google Adsense.

Google has been so generous that I decided to set up Adsense on all my websites and blogs. Google Adsense has been the easiest way to make money online for me. I just hope other people learn from my mistakes and monetize their sites with Adsense before they lose too much money.

Today I'd like to talk a little about Google adsense. Basically put, Google is a advertising and marketing giant, who is willing to share some revenue with us, the Internet publishers, for a fair share of our traffic.

Upon registration to the Adsense program, Google provides the publisher (you and me) with special codes that can tell them through which website or blog X or Y advertisement was clicked. They then share a portion of their revenue from that ad with the owner or manager of said website or blog.

Long story short, Google Adsense is the easiest way to monetize your website or blog. Keep in mind, though, that having quality content on your site usually commands the best placement on the search engines, better ads and therefore a better share of revenue from Google.

Today I would like to address affiliate marketing. This form of website monetization has been around for quite some time now, but there are only a small percentage of webmasters who actually make a living out of affilate marketing. To affiliate with a company you have to go to the company's website a find out if they hold an affiliate marketing scheme first.
The easiest way to find large affiliate marketing schemes is to register in large B2B corporations like Commission Junction or Linkshare (to name a couple). These companies offer free memberships and are relatively easy to understand and manage.

If you have Adsense and Google upgraded your account, you can also participate in their Referral Ads scheme which is more or less the same as an afiliate scheme without the hassle of more registrations.
